Fundamentals of Design with Light I

This course is aimed at students interested in light as an artistic and design medium. This part of the course covers the fundamentals. We like to think of working with light as painting with expanded means. What shines, and in what way? In the light laboratory, we gain concrete, visual experience through experiments and by observing and evaluating light sources, thereby sharpening our eye for the many forms of light we encounter every day. Numerous examples will help us understand the nature of light and its use in art and design.

We’ll explore the vast array of natural phenomena that we can utilise in our work with light. Engaging with this medium can be beneficial not only in art and design, but also in art education, the organisation of exhibitions and in our private lives. We’ll also take our first steps in digital lighting control. No prior knowledge is required. Software and controllers enable us to control light and suitable lighting fixtures. We use these to create individual light animations. The course simplifies the process of hiring lighting equipment and is also intended as preparation for project work, for example in the light studio. Ingo Wendt takes a very practical approach and is happy to offer guidance on your own projects.

The course is led by Ingo Wendt, Head of the Light Laboratory; it is a face-to-face course.

Register at: “i.wendt@hbksaar.de” or on the day; the event will take place in the auditorium; the foyer is centrally located in the main building. From the HBK’s inner courtyard, turn left and go up the stairs to reach the auditorium, which is the room directly above the foyer.  Etcs 4, “Practical Studies”, can be earned; sessions take place on Thursdays from 4.00 pm to 6.00 pm, with minor adjustments possible by arrangement; the course begins on 15 October; there will be no session on 22 October due to trial lectures; you can join the course until 29 October.
